About Special Collections
About: UMDNJ - Special Collections is the only collection in the state entirely devoted to providing resources in the history of medicine in New Jersey.
Mission: UMDNJ – Special Collections supports the mission of the UMDNJ University Libraries: To support quality healthcare, education, research, and community outreach by providing resources, systems, and an educational environment, which foster independent and informed use of biomedical information.
Service: Special Collections serves the Libraries, faculty, students, staff, and other researchers. The Department collects, preserves, promotes, and provides access to materials documenting the history of the health sciences in New Jersey in particular, medical history in general, and the history of UMDNJ and its antecedent institutions.
Resources: Rare, antiquarian, and in-print books; pamphlets; historical and current journals; ephemera; broadsides; posters; manuscripts; oral histories; trade catalogues; almanacs; illustrations; photographs; postcards; audio and video recordings; slides; and artifacts.
Location: Room C327 in the George F. Smith Library of the Health Sciences - Campus Map and Directions to the Smith Library
Hours: 10am – 5pm weekdays.
Access: The collections are open to the public, usually by appointment. Appointments are required for visiting researchers and those expecting to use Special Collections for extended periods.
