Images and Video Collections

The following is a list of multimedia sites available to Smith and RWJ Library patrons. For access to licensed collections from outside of the University, you will be prompted to login with Remote Access. Unrestricted sites available to the general public are so noted.

An expanded selection is now available due to the Rutgers integration.

Additional resources are available in the Media & Microcomputer Center located in the George F. Smith Library (Newark).

Multimedia Description
an@tomy.tv Stat!Ref anatomy.tv offers detailed 3D models of human anatomy that can be rotated, sectioned and stripped to different layers. Users can study various body regions and test themselves by using the customizable quiz maker. Includes other supportive materials, such as MRIs, videos, slides, and biomechanical actions. Users are free to download any graphics to their desktops.

These streaming videos show step-by-step examinations with rationales for the clinician's actions and contains expanded discussions of health history taking, interviewing, and describing findings. Graphics illustrate key components of anatomy and physiology.

BioDigital Human™ BioDigital Human™ is a virtual 3D body that brings to life thousands of medically accurate anatomy objects and health conditions in an interactive Web-based platform. It allows users to create prosections and to embed the links into an online course.

Biomedical & Life Sciences Collection
(Henry Stewart Talks)
The Biomedical & Life Sciences Collection includes over 1,500 seminar style presentations containing the latest research and developments as well as the disciplines fundamentals from many of the world's leading experts, including Nobel Laureates. The talks can be embedded into websites, web pages and learning portals. The talks are also mobile compatible.
CDC-TV "CDC-TV is a new online video delivery resource available through CDC.gov. Web visitors can now view or download videos on a variety of health, safety and preparedness topics. Most videos are short and all include closed-captioning (some videos are also open-captioned), so they are accessible to all interested viewers. The library of videos will expand to include single-topic presentations as well as different video series focused on children, parents, and public health professionals."

Dermnet Dermnet is a website that contains over 9,000 images of skin disease. It is an educational resource for medical professionals. Pictures are sized to fit into Powerpoint presentations for use in live lectures. Publishing or posting the pictures on a website requires written permission.

Health e Galaxy

Health e Galaxy is a series of continuing medical education video programs on important topics of interest to primary care physicians, hospitalists, and other specialists. The Web-based programs fall into four main categories: Masters Programs on Critical Topics in Medicine, State-mandated CME Topics, Programs Covering Hospital Quality/Performance and Credentialing Issues, and Late-Breaking and Hot Topics. Programs are presented in a grand rounds style. Every month a new CME video is developed and released. Note: Older titles on the site may say 'Available on DVD/VHS only'. Please search for these in the catalog, we may already have a copy.

HealthyNJ - Images This section from HealthyNJ links to assorted image sites on the web. There are atlases of dermatology, pathology, ophthalmology and more.

Images from the History of Medicine Images from the History of Medicine (IHM) provides access to nearly 70,000 images in the collections of the History of Medicine Division (HMD) of the U.S National Library of Medicine (NLM). The collection includes portraits, photographs, caricatures, genre scenes, posters, and graphic art illustrating the social and historical aspects of medicine dated from the 15th to 21st century.

This site contains some materials that may be protected by United States or foreign copyright laws. It is the users' responsibility to determine compliance with the law when reproducing, transmitting, or distributing images found in IHM.

Insidermedicine "The Insidermedicine Project is a physician-led news and knowledge-translation initiative that allows patients, doctors and medical students to keep up on the latest medical information by watching our unique videos that are created each and every weekday by our team of medical experts. Our goal is to reach patients, medical doctors and students around the world to ensure that each is receiving a daily “evidence based” health and medical update."

JAMA Multimedia Contains interactive figures, videos and other multimedia from JAMA.
JoVE
Journal of Visualized Experiments
Journal of Visualized Experiments (JoVE) is a peer reviewed, PubMed indexed journal devoted to the publication of biological, medical, chemical and physical research in a video format. JoVE was established as a new tool in life science publication and communication, with participation of scientists from leading research institutions. JoVE takes advantage of video technology to capture and transmit the multiple facets and intricacies of life science research.
MD Video Education Center The MD Video Education Center from the Brigham and Women's Hospital (teaching affiliate) of Harvard Medical School provides topical updates on procedural and treatment areas.

MedPix - Medical Image Database Online peer reviewed radiology teaching files. MedPix™ is provided by the Departments of Radiology and Biomedical Informatics, Uniformed Services University, Bethesda, MD. The material is organized by disease category, disease location (organ system), and by patient profiles. The database can be searched through multiple internal search engines. In addition, search formulations can be sent directly to PubMed, or to other outside search engines. Registered users may browse the image database through a "slide sorter" module.

MEDSpace Digital Repository A collection of roughly 4,000 items from the Duke University Medical Center Library's Historical Images in Medicine (HIM) database. Included are digitized versions of Georg Bartisch's Ophthalmodouleia, Das ist Augendienst (1583), The Four Seasons (17th Century), Dr. Howard T. Stewart's album of eminent physicians and scientists (mid-19th Century), and a collection of over 500 medically-related bookplates.

New England Journal of Medicine Multimedia These teaching videos from the New England Journal of Medicine are intended to help students, trainees, and younger physicians to learn procedural techniques from experienced colleagues. Each video is from five to eight minutes long and is accompanied online by a printable summary to supplement the video. Available in streaming and download versions.
PubMed Central Images When searching the PubMed Central database, PMC Image Search results are included in the right side tab of the article results.

SpringerImages SpringerImages is an online searchable database that includes growing collection of scientific images that spans the scientific, technical and medical fields, including high-quality clinical images from images.MD. The continually updated collection – currently over 1.5 million images – gathers photos, graphs, histograms, figures and tables. The SpringerImages interface enables users to search through captions, keywords, context and more, even jumping from the image to the source article. Users can create personalized image “sets,” and can easily export images for use in their own presentations or lectures.
3D Multimedia Approach to the Diagnosis of Low Back Pain This product is aimed at medical students, residents and attending physicians, to enhance the education of those evaluating individuals with low back pain. In this Case participants will be able to visualize 3D interactive virtual reality and multimedia images of the subjects, experience the physical examination as it occurs using interactive digital video clips, review the diagnostic testing procedure, develop differential diagnosis, review the anatomy (including 3D interactive multimedia full color images taken inside the body), understand and review the diagnosis, and self-test their learned knowledge using a traditional, and/or our novel computerized method.
VAST: Academic Video Online VAST: Academic Video Online is a large multidisciplinary database of searchable streaming video.
Wellcome Images Wellcome Images is constantly updated with new clinical, and biomedical and historical images from the Wellcome Library, Europe's leading resource for the study of history of medicine which recently re-launched as part of the new and forthcoming Wellcome Collection. All content has been made available under a Creative Commons Licence, which allows users to copy, distribute and display the image, provided the source is fully attributed and it is used for non-commercial purposes.
