NIH Public Access Policy

NIH has released its new Public Access Policy which became effective April 7, 2008. Under a new federal law, NIH is now requiring that the author's final version of any peer-reviewed journal article resulting from NIH activities must be submitted to the PubMed Central (PMC) repository, where it will be made available to the public within 12 months after the journal article is published.

As of May 25, 2008, NIH applications, proposals and progress reports must include the PubMed Central reference number (PMCID) when citing an article that falls under the policy and is authored or co-authored by the investigator, or arose from the investigator's NIH award. This policy includes applications, proposals and progress reports submitted to the NIH for the May 25, 2008 due date and subsequent due dates.

UMDNJ Librarians will provide assistance to authors who have questions about the policy or need assistance in finding publisher policies, PMC ID numbers, or other information. Contact your campus library for additional information, questions, and support.
